Rector's profile

Professor Emmanuel Adedayo Fasakin rose from a very humble beginning to a level of fame and global recognition, and indeed, one of the great men of our time. He was born into the respected family of Late Pa and Mrs. Fasakin in Omuo Ekiti on 5th March, 1956. He attended the Methodist Primary School, Omuo Ekiti between 1962 and 1969 for his Primary School Leaving Certificate. Guided by the conviction that education is the key to personal fulfilment and societal transformation, he proceeded to Omuo Comprehensive High School, Omuo Ekiti where he obtained the West African School Certificate of Examinations in 1974. His passion for education further propelled him to seek admission into the University of Ibadan in 1978, where he relentlessly pursued and meritoriously bagged the Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries Management in 1982, and the Master of Science degree also in Fisheries Management in 1985. In furtherance of his vison to be a scholar of repute, he enrolled for Doctoral degree at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and bagged the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Fish Nutrition and Utilization in 1997. Professor Fasakin also has a very rich and diverse post-graduation work experience. He started as Clerical Officer with the National Electric Power Authority between 1974 and 1976. He has also worked as a teacher in notable Secondary Schools and rose to the level of Vice-Principal. His enthusiasm and fulfilment as a teacher provided some impetus for him, and was thus appointed as Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Education of the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Ogun State in 1989, where he rose by the dint of hard-work and exemplary pedagogical practices to the level of Lecturer I and Head of Department. Professor Fasakin then migrated to the Federal University of Technology, Akure in 1995 as Lecturer I in the Department of Fisheries. His career blossomed exceptionally in FUTA, particularly because of his special endowment of humility, diligence, outstanding productivity and human relations. His career ascension was therefore smooth, with his promotion to the Grade of Senior Lecturer in 1998; Associate Professor in 2001 and appointment as Full Professor in 2004. Professor Fasakin has consistently exhibited high levels of professionalism and scholarship in the performance of his duties. He performs his functions with absolute objectivity and merit. He contributes intelligently to discussions at all levels of decision making in the University. It is therefore not surprising that he was made to hold various positions of trust and responsibilities (which he did without any blemish), first as Head of Department between 2004 and 2007; then a 2-term Dean of Students’ Affairs between 2007 and 2011. He was Chairman, Committee of Deans between 2009 and 2010; and was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) for two consecutive terms between 2011 and 2015. Within this period, he was appointed and served as Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University between February and May 2012. Professor Fasakin has travelled wide in the course of his academic career. He was a Commonwealth Research Fellow and Visiting Lecturer at the University of Plymouth, United Kingdom between 2003 and 2004. It is remarkable to note that Professor Fasakin has taught at all levels of University education; has been a productive mentor; has successfully supervised ten Doctoral theses, fifteen Master of Technology dissertations and has close to a hundred publications in learned journals. He has also served as External Examiner to various Universities in the country. The Yorubas will say: fish has no hiding place. One is sure that it is the track records of Professor Fasakin’s outstanding performances at all times as a scholar and resource manager of note that made the former President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, to identify a tested and trusted Professor Fasakin for appointment as pioneer Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ile-Oluji, Ondo State in March 2015. Right in the new Polytechnic, Professor Fasakin has brought his very rich and diverse experience to bear, and by the special grace of God, he is not only fostering a responsible and responsive leadership in the Polytechnic, but is working hard to lay a very solid academic, administrative and general foundation for the Polytechnic. Professor Fasakin has been recognized for distinguished awards globally and locally. He received the SALUTE TO GREATNESS AND FELLOWSHIP AWARD of the International Chartered World Learned Society of the United States of America in 2015; Distinguished Merit Award for Excellence (Transparency and Integrity) and Fellowship of the Institute of Industrialists and Corporate Administrators in 2014; and has been nominated as the Knight Order Grand Cross by the Chartered World Order of the Knights of Justice of Peace (USA). He has also received the Vice-Chancellor’s Special Recognition for Selfless Services in 2011 and 2012; Best Dean of Students’ Award for Outstanding Performance (2010); Best Lecturer of the Year in the School of Agriculture (1998); Role Model Award (2009); Great Achievers in Public Service Excellence Award (2011); Award of Outstanding Leadership Qualities by FUTA’s 2012 set of students; and a host of other recognitions too numerous to mention. He is happily married and blessed with children.
