A Good Working Enviroment and Culture
May 14, 2025

It is not sufficient to be seen at our desks or schedules carrying out our daily routine, we should note that being efficient and effective are quite important but are not the same in the workplace. “Efficient” is getting things done right within the shortest possible time and possibly at minimal cost, while “effective” is said to be getting the right things done with the expected results.

Efficiency is the manner to accomplish a task with the least waste of time and effort. It is the ability to accomplish a job with a minimum expenditure of time and effort. Efficiency entails using the least inputs to achieve the highest amount of output. Efficiency is often measurable ability to avoid making mistakes or wasting materials, energy, efforts, money and time while performing a task. We are therefore, encouraged not to waste paper, ink, materials, money, time or other resources in carrying out our tasks on our various desks.

Effectiveness on the other hand is the degree to which a given task is successfully carried out in producing a desired outcome or the ability to produce desired output. Effectiveness happens when everything supports everything else.

It is required that an officer be efficient but it is even more compulsory that he or she be effective on the job.

There are five identified key themes of Effectiveness, these include efficient, reliable, elegant, appropriate and integrated.

Efficient: optimizes use of resources, minimizes wastage of resources.

Reliable: predictable, consistent, self-correcting, supports a single source of truth

Elegant: involves clarity, simplicity, consistency, self-adapting for human factors

Appropriate: supports and optimizes support for work purpose

Integrated: creates, supports and optimizes synergy across the entire system.

These are the expectations of our employer from all staff and students of this great Institution. Let us bear in mind at all times that time spent in carrying out any task, if not done efficiently and effectively is actually time wasted. Process, resource and result are very important in the evaluation of outcomes.
