The Department is one of the five (5) Pioneer Departments of Federal Polytechnic Ile-Oluji, approved by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in 2016 and currently one of the Departments under the School of Applied Science, with eleven (11) academic staff and two (2) non-academic staff as listed underneath.

The Staff of the Department are further saddled with academic and social responsibilities via the various committees and sub-units within the department.

The aim of the National Diploma programme in the Department is to produce assistant statisticians, who are capable of collecting data, analyzing and making inference under supervision. The various objectives include;

  • producing diplomats who can understand the application of statistics and statistical methods,
  • producing diplomats who can understand the use of computers for various statistical purposes,
  • producing diplomats who have acquired a good knowledge of basic statistics and statistical methods,
  • to set out statistical projects under supervision.

Applicant must possess at least five credit passes in SSCE/NECO/NABTEB O’level. The five (5) subjects must include English Language, Mathematics, one basic science (Biology/Agricultural science, Animal Husbandry/Health Science) and any two (2) of the following subjects: Statistics, Further Mathematics, Geography, Chemistry, Physics, Economics or five (5) credit passes in relevant subjects as stated in (i) above obtained in the final examination of the Polytechnic’s Preliminary ND Programme.

In addition, candidates seeking Direct Entry admission into the full-time programme must sit for the Universities and Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for the admission year and obtain the minimum pass-mark approved by the Academic Board for the year. The UTME subjects are English Language, Mathematics, and two (2) subjects from the subjects listed in (i) above.

The programme comprises of four (4) semester of classroom activities (teaching and practical) and four (4) months of supervised Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). A semester is made up of seventeen (17) weeks of academic activities, i. e. fifteen (15) weeks of intensive teaching and practical, tests and quizzes, and two (2) weeks for examination.
